In the midst of the sprawling city of Austin, one of the fastest growing metropolitan centers in the United States, is a beautiful antebellum house that is the home of the governor of Texas (Fig. 1). Begun in 1854 and completed in 1856, the Greek revival house evokes another era, when Texas was young and Austin just a dusty frontier settlement. This year the Texas Governor's Mansion, which is the country's fourth oldest governor's residence in continuous occupation, celebrates its 150th anniversary. (1)
