WASHINGTON (AFX) - The Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday selected three companies to compete for up to $1.35 billion in contracts to produce Cargo Advanced Automated Radiography Systems that will be used to scan containers for nuclear materials at U.S. ports.

Defense contractor L-3 Communications Holdings Inc., American Science & Engineering Inc., a maker of X-ray inspection machines, and privately held military contractor Science Applications International Corp. were each awarded seven-year pacts.

The first two years of each deal will be spent producing prototypes that must pass a stringent government approval …
