Sep. 12--SANTA FE, N.M. -- A bronze sculpture by Milton Elting Hebald, a renowned artist whose work is featured in museums and public spaces across the world, was broken Saturday night by vandals outside the Pushkin Gallery on Canyon Road.
Gallery representatives described the piece, titled "Happy Mother," as one of a kind and priceless.
Several pieces at other galleries on Canyon Road were pushed over and damaged and there was other vandalism to businesses on the street Saturday night, gallery associates and store owners said.
Deborah Fritz-Leyden, of Giacobbe Fritz Fine Art, said she has gotten used to vandals hitting Canyon Road at least once a month. On Sunday morning, Giacobbe Fritz's owners found a few of their flower pots thrown in the middle of the road.
"We are just small businesses just trying to make it," Fritz said. "The business community is just frustrated with this vandalism."
One police report filed as a result of the Saturday night rampage estimated the damage at more than $200,000.
