ST. PETERSBURG -- With the tying run on base in the eighth inning and left-hander Eric O'Flaherty warming up in the Seattle bullpen, Kevin Witt didn't think he was going to get his opportunity to hit with the game on the line.

If O'Flaherty came into the game, Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon had right-handed Rocco Baldelli poised to pinch-hit.

"Which is understandable," Witt said.

Surprisingly, Mariners manager Mike Hargrove stayed with right-handed starter Felix Hernandez, who retired Witt on three ground balls to the right side during his first three at-bats.
