If you think motorcycles and fine art mix about as well as motor oil and watercolors, cruise over to Don Smolinski's Harley Davidson dealership in Hughesville, Maryland. Since April, the showroom of glittering hogs has also displayed The March of Time, a huge 116-year-old painting that Smolinski and his brother Bob bought from the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The 21- by 12-foot oil painting of Civil War veterans marching through Boston Common was done by Canadian Henry Sandham and completed in 1890. The artist then donated it to the Smithsonian, which stored it for a century before de-accessioning the piece because Sandham's …
