HAIL the womenfolk of mariners throughout the ages.

Their sacrifices and struggle to survive as the men set out to sea are ever in the thoughts of Efthimios Mitropoulos, secretary-general of the International Maritime Organization.

Mr Mitropoulos spends much of his life in the company of diplomats, shipowners and other maritime experts, but never forgets his roots.

His hometown of Galaxidi was a major maritime centre during the era of sailing ships.

That ancient seaport, today an attractive resort, will be the site of a memorial to the wife of the seafarer, towards which from his own pocket he has donated considerable sums.

In recent months, several awards accompanied by prize money have been bestowed on Mr Mitropoulos, in his personal capacity.
