MELBOURNE, Sept 1 Asia Pulse - BHP Billiton Ltd (ASX:BHP) has confirmed that strike action at the world's largest copper mine, Escondida, is over after union workers voted to end a 25-day strike.
A BHP Billiton spokeswoman today said miners will return to work at the Chilean mine tomorrow at 0800 local time.
The new pay deal approved in a ballot includes a Ch$9 million (US$17,000) bonuses payment for the end of negotiations and for market conditions, an interest-free loan of Ch$2 million (US$3,700) plus a five per cent increase in base salary.
BHP Billiton, which controls the mine, said it had allowed the improvements given that the union had undertaken to extend the duration of the contract until 2013.
"The company expresses its satisfaction for the agreement achieved, which is subject to its signature," said mine operator Minera Escondida.
The deal also allows for improvements in health, education and housing benefits for the workers and their families.
