TAIPEI, Sept 1 Asia Pulse - A plan by Finance Minister Ho Chih-chin to levy an energy tax from July 1 2007 came under heavy fire Thursday from opposition lawmakers who described him as "unfit for the job" and criticized him for being "callous" to the suffering of the Taiwan people.
Legislators of the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) told a press conference at the Legislative Yuan that Ho seems interested only in extracting money from the people, as his tax reform plan will levy an energy tax on all forms of energy from July next year until 2016.
"The finance minister should not treat the people as the government's automatic teller machine," said Legislator Tsai Chin-lung, a whip of the KMT legislative caucus.
Tsai estimated that the energy tax levy would translate into an extra burden of some NT$3,000 (US$91) per year to the average household, which would in turn affect the manufacturing industries and cause many small and medium-sized businesses ...
