TAIPEI, Sept 1 Asia Pulse - The Cabinet sent its policy report for 2007 to the Legislative Yuan Wednesday, in which it emphasized that national security, social harmony and economic development are essential to ensuring the country's sustainable development.
The report said the core values of the government's national security policy are to protect the country and its people and that to do so, Taiwan needs to strengthen its defense capabilities to effectively address the cross-Taiwan Strait military imbalance that is tilting in China's favor.
To help develop a popular consensus on national identity, the country needs to stick to focusing on "Taiwanese consciousness, " standing firm on its position and moving forward pragmatically, the report said.
Regarding cross-strait relations, the government will follow the principles of "sovereignty, democracy, peace, equality" and promote cross-strait economic and trade exchanges and cooperation based on the principle of "active management, effective opening, " the report said.
On social peace, the Cabinet will prioritize improving law enforcement, attacking crime at its roots and enhancing public order, the report said.
As for economic development, achieving prosperity and wealth equity will be the government's main objectives, the report said.
