TAIPEI, Sept 1 Asia Pulse - President Chen Shui-bian said Thursday that the government will continue encouraging businesses to engage in research and development, with the goal of turning Taiwan into an international R&D headquarters.
Chen said invention and creation are strongly related to a country's economic growth and competitiveness and that Taiwan has always enjoyed the reputation of being the "kingdom of invention," with the number of patents filed by Taiwanese ranking fourth in the world.
The government is actively encouraging multinational enterprises to set up their regional R&D bases in Taiwan, hoping the introduction of foreign talent, technology, resources and systems into Taiwan will complement that of domestic businesses, Chen said.
