JEJU, South Korea, Sept 1 Asia Pulse - Samsung Electronics Co. (KSE:005930) on Thursday succeeded in conducting a public demonstration of fourth-generation (4G) communications technologies for the first time in the world, paving the way for the South Korean company to lead the future telecom market.

At the two-day 4G Forum underway on South Korea's southern resort island, Samsung Electronics held the demonstration in which it showcased what the world could be like if the latest communications technologies are put to commercial use.

The 4G communications technologies, an upgraded version of existing wireless communications platforms such as wireless Internet WiBro, enable people to log onto the high-speed Internet even when they are in motion.

"By late 2008, we will be able to apply the 4G technologies to mobile handsets," Samsung's president Lee Ki-tae told reporters after completing the public event. "We should put our top priority on developing the 4G platforms along with 3.5G WiBro."

Lee added the demonstration proved that Samsung is leading its rivals in the 4G communications area by proving seamless service even while on the move, though Germany's Siemens AG and Japan's NTT DoCoMo Inc. had unveiled similar services.

Samsung's 4G technologies will guarantee a faster and more seamless transmission of data and other multimedia content, compared with WiBro or wireless broadband, which was launched in June for the first time in South Korea, the company said.

Under the new platform, users can download and upload data at speeds of up to 1 Gbps when they are stationary. Even when they are on the move, for example, at speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour, the transmission rate can be maintained at 100 Mbps, the company explained.
