Aug. 30--To paraphrase an old saying, cool is in the eye of the beholder.

And the buyer -- especially if we're talking about a teenager heading back to school.

With another year about to begin, teens in Monmouth and Ocean counties are stocking up on what they consider to be the hot items, ranging from high-tech study aids to primitive-looking jewelry and accessories.

Amanda Waller, 15, a sophomore at Lacey Township High School, said canaries -- small computerized dictionaries -- are popular among her classmates. On the other hand, one thing that no longer seems to be cool is the use of backpacks.
