OVERVIEW:
Hard hit by adverse pressures, Malaysia's two airlines have just reported lacklustre financial results although the domestic aviation industry continues to register healthy growth in air passenger traffic.
Industry statistics show that air passenger traffic grew 4.6 per cent on-year in the first six months of this year.
During the same period, the nation's main international gateway, the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), recorded 5.4 per cent growth in passenger traffic.
Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB), the operator of airports in the country, said passenger traffic at KLIA registered five per cent growth year-on-year to 1.91 million in April this year from 1.82 million in April 2005.
MAHB said the number of international passengers rose 6.6 per cent in April, compared to two per cent increase in domestic passengers during the period.
Other airports in Malaysia recorded lower growth rate of 1.8 per cent to 1.48 million passengers from 1.45 million passengers previously.
The Malaysian government is optimistic over the current air traffic trend.
"We are confident that a similar rate of growth will continue for the next few years," Transport Minister Chan Kong Choy said at a recent EU-Asia civil aviation meeting.
OUTLOOK:
The Malaysian government's optimism on the continued robust performance of the aviation industry appears to be based on recent measures to liberalise the domestic sector.
