I am grieving for my husband of nineteen years, A. M. Rosenthal, also known as Abe. He died on May 10, two weeks after suffering a stroke.
He hadn't been well, in pain from spinal stenosis, an arthritic hip, and a number of age-related ailments (he was 84). On the night of April 25, we spent a happy, contented evening, watching Helen Mirren as Elizabeth I on HBO after earlier deciding to take it easy and not go round Manhattan on a friend's yacht as we'd planned. Instead, we had supper on a tray, talked about the royal family and the day's news, and went to bed, calm and relaxed.
I woke at 6:30 a.m. to find Abe unconscious. ...
