In order to understand what's happening in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," it helps to have seen the first installment, "The Curse of the Black Pearl." But it doesn't help that much. The new plot has all the appeal of a seaweed sandwich, being dark, salty, and indigestible. Most of the characters from the earlier film return, their lives nicely endangered by fresh plights.
