Better tractors with tighter turning, larger decks, cup holders, and other amenities are cutting a wider swath through power-equipment dealers and home centers. But some models from familiar brands aren't what they seem.
One of John Deere's new Select Series tractors is our new king of the hill in performance. While the dealer-only, $3,500 model we tested costs hundreds more than most home-center models, it has spacious seating, slick controls, and tighter turns via four-wheel steering. A similar, $2,800 version with two-wheel steering should mow just as well.
