On the eve of summer-travel season, lots of people are looking to save money on gas. One sure (if unusual) way is to run a diesel car on leftover frying oil. Our experts converted a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta diesel to a "grease car." We also tested B100, a pure biodiesel fuel developed from vegetable matter, and B5, a 5 percent biodiesel blend.
How a grease car works. Running a car on cooking oil isn't as easy as pumping Mazola into your tank. The car must be outfitted with a vegetable-oil fuel system. We used a $795 kit from Greasecar Vegetable Fuel Systems (www.greasecar.com). The kit includes a tank for the oil, hoses and fittings to warm the oil, and an inline filter to remove contaminants. To screen out big food particles, we first strained the oil through a paper paint filter. We got leftover oil free from a local diner. Most restaurants are glad to get rid of it.
