WASHINGTON, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- One of the most dangerous, addictive street drugs, methamphetamine -- also called speed or poor man's cocaine -- is also one of the easiest to make. Just a few household materials can create a deadly stimulant that causes psychotic behavior and brain damage.
Approximately 11.7 million Americans older than 12 reported trying meth at least once during their lifetimes in the 2004 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
With no effective treatment available, those addicted have limited options. That's why biochemist Sam Sanderson, an associate professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, is creating a vaccine to encourage the body to fight the drug.
