To coincide with the Edinburgh International Festival, the museums of that city are staging major exhibitions in August. In the Royal Scottish Academy Building, a show devoted to the paintings of Adam Elsheimer is on view until September 3. Earlier this year it was seen at the Stadelmusuem in Frankfurt, and it will be at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London from September 20 to December 3.
The artist died at the age of thirty-two and worked very slowly. Only about thirty-five of his works survive, and all but three are in the exhibition, which is entitled Devil in the Detail: The Paintings of Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610). The curator is Emilie Gordenker. The accompanying catalogue, which has been edited by Michael Maek-Gerard, is distributed in North America by the University of Washington Press.
