Tiffany and Company was founded as Tiffany and Young, a fancy goods store, in New York City in 1837. Charles Lewis Tiffany, one of the founders, combined a commitment to excellence in design, craftsmanship, and materials with business acumen. From the outset, the company stocked a combination of modestly priced goods, such as a mounted section of steel cable commemorating the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable in 1858, as well as such expensive ones as diamonds acquired at the 1887 sale of the French crown jewels. Tiffany also sold relatively moderately priced ornaments, such as the matching pearl necklace and brooch Abraham Lincoln chose for his wife to wear at his inaugural ball in 1861.
