In the three decades since America abandoned its South Vietnamese allies, it has become common to compare subsequent U.S. wars to what supposedly befell us in Southeast Asia. Dire warnings of "another Vietnam" are a particular favorite tactic of those who aim to block further use of U.S. military forces abroad. But the war in Vietnam did not have to turn out as it did.
