Looking for a new vet for Fido? With almost 75% of 2005 and 2006 U.S. veterinary school grads being women, chances are it will be a woman.
Men were the norm until the mid-1980s, when it became about a 50-50 split, according to the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges. The divide seems destined to grow, said Lisa Greenhill, executive director of diversity at the association, with women now making up almost 78% of vet school students. "A lot of effort was made to make sure young women were prepared to go into careers like science," she said.
