The trend of retiring college and university presidents sticking around to help their replacements has picked up steam over the last decade, according to the American Council on Education. "They're already popular with key alumni and donors," said Tim McDonough. "They can open doors for the university, so it makes sense."
At Kent State University OH, trustees chose to retain retired President Carol Cartwright as ambassador and fundraiser. She continues to receive a $270,000 base salary, plus health insurance and expenses, while her replacement, Lester Lefton, moved into the presidential house and receives $350,000 plus benefits and bonuses.
