Want more male students at your small school? Start a football team.
Over the past 10 years, nearly 50 schools have started or revived football, more than 80% at small colleges. During the same period, 25 schools dropped the sport, most from NCAA Division I.
Four years ago when Seton Hill University PA--a former all-women's school--become coed, 18% of undergrads were male. After adding football last year, it rose to 41% male.
"I could have started a spiffy new major of study, spent a lot of money on lab equipment and hired a few high-powered professors," said president JoAnne Boyle. "Instead I started a football team, brought in hundreds of paying students, added a vibrant piece to our campus life and broadened our recognition factor."
