Once in a male-dominated profession, women now make up 48% of members of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA). These certified athletic trainers treat sports injuries and liaison between coaches and players, and women are becoming more prominent at the college level. In fact, the new head trainer for the UCLA football team is 39-year-old Debbie Iwasaka, the first woman in the job.
Most female trainers are single with no children, free to work early and late hours, travel with the team and be on call 24/7. Unfortunately for the career prospects by female trainers, parity stops at male professional sports. Only 23 women in NATA work with pro male teams, compared with 590 men.
