At the recent national conference of the National Association of College and University Attorneys in Chicago, participants heard lawsuits for retaliation against whistle-blowers were an increasing concern. Here are two new ones:
* The former head of a program for disadvantaged students at Seton Hall University NJ is suing the school and seven officials, claiming she was fired after filing a racial complaint against her supervisors.
Carol McMillan-Lonesome said that after she filed a discrimination complaint in 2002, the school retaliated with an investigation and financial audit of her Educational Opportunity Program. In October of 2003, Seton Hall accused her of insubordination and failure to cooperate with the investigation. It then fired her with only one day of severance pay, according to her lawsuit.
McMillan-Lonesome, who is black, has two master's degrees and had worked at the school since 1974. According to the suit, she experienced discrimination for several years as the school denied her promotions and blocked her ...
