On March 2, 2005, Anthony Blaskoski of Kane County, Illinois, saw flames coming from his neighbors' house and rushed over. With no concern for his own safety, Blaskoski prepared to run inside the burning, smoke-filled home of William and Kim Gunderson. Mrs. Gunderson arrived at the home at just about the same time as Blaskoski, and told the eager rescuer that her husband and five-year-old daughter, Emma, were still inside the burning house.
Blaskoski charged into the inferno, searching for the father and daughter. He became overcome by the smoke and ran outside to catch a breath, then dashed back in. He reentered the house twice more before rescuing and managing to revive Mr. Gunderson.
