Aug. 18--The state charter school board Thursday approved the applications of three schools, choosing from a field of 15 seeking charters for the 2007-08 school year.

The tough decision was needed because the 2006 Legislature capped charter school growth while it studies charter school funding and policy.

Two of the newly approved charter schools are conversions of existing schools: Guadalupe Schools-Early Learning Center, an alternative elementary school serving at-risk students on the city's west side as part of Salt Lake City School District; and Canyon Rim Elementary, which was closed by Granite School District earlier…
