Dec. 9--NORTH EASTHAM, Mass. -- It was the fake drops of solder that really got to John Knight.
In business for 34 years at The Glass Eye in North Eastham, Knight has created just about everything in stained glass, from small picture frames to large signature windows for churches. Hard work at the bench has taken a toll on him physically. Bad back, bad knees.
So it really ticked him off when, last summer, a customer brought in a small, stained-glass wall sconce purchased at the Christmas Tree Shops for $1.95. It appeared to be a knockoff of a piece Knight has been making for the past decade and selling for $31.95.
The $1.95 sconce even had a molded lead seam that mimicked the distinctive decorative solder drops Knight applies by hand.
"We're the only ones who make these," his wife, Donna, said yesterday.
