Sep. 16--HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -- Two months after Orange County closed its recycling drop-off site in Hillsborough, officials are still looking for a new site in town.
Orange County planned to open a temporary site at Hampton Pointe this fall until a permanent one could be built at the 58-acre shopping center at the intersection of N.C. 86 and Interstate 85.
Hampton Pointe's developers have agreed to allow a recycling center in their project, but the sites they have offered are "unworkable," said Gayle Wilson, the county's director of solid waste management.
"They seem at first glance to be essentially unworkable, impracticable, much too constrained for safe operations, excessively expensive and not recycling site development options that would be acceptable to Orange County," Wilson wrote in an August memo to Hillsborough Town Manager Eric Peterson.
