Jul. 8--RIVERDALE, N.D. -- More than 2,400 year-old pallid sturgeons got their first hint Wednesday that there may be more to life than swimming laps in the sanctuary of the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery.
They were netted, dumped in water-filled buckets, poured into coolers, man-handled and stuck with a big needle, scanned, measured, weighed, tattooed with a small needle and finally returned to their tank.
Today their numbers will be divided into thirds, loaded into transport tanks and hauled to their new homes. Hello, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri, destination spots where they will be introduced to the Missouri River, their home for the rest...
