Jan. 30--Red-hot Johnny Depp's Academy Award nomination this week could not have come at a more opportune time for Sony Pictures Entertainment, which earlier this month decided to move up the date of his upcoming film "Secret Window" by more than a month.

The Depp movie isn't the only upcoming high-profile release to get a release date switch. Meg Ryan's "Against The Ropes," set to bow on Feb. 20, had to wait a year, and Disney's "The Alamo" hits theaters Easter weekend 2004 instead of Christmas Day 2003.

Whether the release date swaps will help or hurt the box office performances of these films remains to be seen. But in the unpredictable world of movie distribution, a movie's opening weekend position can make all the difference to its success.
