A Legal Mood Lifter
Researchers are investigating a new antidepressant and pain reliever that works like marijuana, without the illegal side effects. Currently called URB597Nand so far only tested in miceNit raises levels of endocannabinoids, the brainOs own marijuana-like chemicals that trigger feelings of well-being. Gabriella Gobbi, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist at McGill University in Montreal, in collaboration with Daniele Piomelli, professor of pharmacology at the University of California[ETH]Irvine, determined that the drug balances mood- and stress-regulating brain chemicals such as serotonin as effectively as existing antidepressantsNand doesnOt cause intoxication. Although the mood-lifting and pain-reducing effects of marijuana (cannabis) have long been reported, Othis is the first time it has been shown that a drug that increases endocannabinoids in the brain can improve your mood,O Gobbi says. The discovery, she adds, Oprovides hope for the developmentO of new, safe, and more effective alternative treatments for depression and pain.
