Researchers in Australia observed people outdoors on sunny or lightly overcast summer days from 1993 to 2002 and found that a mere 47 percent of women were wearing sunglasses at any given timeNand only 37 percent during outdoor exercise. Behavioral scientist Helen Dixon of the Cancer Control Research Institute in Victoria, Australia, says sunglasses are necessary even when it is partly cloudyNand they offer additional protection for those already wearing a wide-brimmed hat. Darrell Rigel, clinical professor of dermatology at NYU Medical Center, estimates that less than a quarter of Americans regularly wear sunglasses. Noting that one in 12 skin cancers occurs around the eyes, he recommends looking for lenses with labels saying they shield against UVA and UVB light.
