Streetlights are set to be powered by wind and waves as part of a GBP1.8 million eco-deal.
County council leaders were expected to agree today to use green energy to light up the 63,500 street lamps across Leicestershire.
Contracts with Scottish and Southern would make the council one of the first in the country to contribute so much towards renewable energy sources.
Officers said the green power would cost GBP6,000 a year more than less eco-friendly electricity contracts.
