Aug. 15--APPLETON -- Not all employers' sick leave policies are created equal.

And being paid for taking sick days to recover from a bout with the flu isn't assured, especially in smaller employers.

The federal Family and Medical Leave Act applies to employers with 50 or more workers.

"It doesn't require that the leave be paid. It requires that the employee be given the time off," said Randy Haak, a Kaukauna attorney who concentrates on labor issues.

For companies that do provide paid sick leave, the calculation process differs, said Tom Wiltzius, senior vice president of Right Management Consultants, a firm with a Grand Chute office that specializes in employee retention and …
