I found much to ponder in Frank Pia's article, "Guarding Against Misconceptions." First, a well-deserved acknowledgement: I have great respect for Pia's efforts to promote life-saving excellence.
In his article, he states that while opinions about lifeguard scanning abound, few of them are rooted in science. That's for sure. In fact, I know of none. Despite the limitations of his own lifeguarding experience to flat-water settings, Pia then asserts that scanning methods should be the same in all settings. Here, I believe he ignores unavoidable realities.
