It's not often that one can lay claim to living in and among legends. I live in a small town in Northern Virginia, which recently laid to rest two giants, both latecomers to the town, both of whom left enduring legacies. The first was Scott Crossfield, who was--along with Chuck Yeager--one of the cadre of test pilots whose brazen daring enabled the X-15 program, which in turn spawned American space flight. Crossfield was the first to break Mach 2, a record he held only for a couple of weeks until Yeager one-upped him. And like Yeager, he had little desire to be an astronaut, preferring the thrill of piloting supersonic aircraft.
