Racing is meant to be an entertaining pastime, and at Newton Abbot it is just that.

There have some extraordinary races in recent weeks that have proved perfect candidates for "what happened next" clips.

Yesterday it was a three-horse affair which had racegoers pondering the outcome after Blue Sovereign decided the walkway to the boxes was a far more attractive option than racing around the track for another circuit in the three miles two-and-a-half furlong novices' chase.

This left long odds-on favourite Alikat in front, with Allow Dancer toiling well behind in her wake.

But without a companion, Alikat decided she too would pull herself up, until Allow Dancer caught up. Coaxed all the way around by Timmy Murphy with pats and ear pulling, she finally won by three lengths.

It must have been one of the slowest races run at the course, but at least the outcome was right for punters.
