Shu Uemura: Makeup Artist
6[currency]6Most women are intimately familiar with the name Shu Uemura. But few realize it belongs to an actual person. That [macron]s because Uemura, who lives and works in Tokyo, has made his career behind the scenes. He got his big break working as a cinematic makeup artist on the set of Frank Sinatra [macron]s 1965 war drama, None But the Brave (shot in Hawaii). [degrees]I had done some acting in Japan and, as a performer in those days, you did your own makeup, [+ or -] he recalls. Impressed by Uemura [macron]s self-taught skills, the movie studio flew him to Hollywood, where he worked on ten more films. In the late [macron]60s, he developed his first product: a cleansing oil called Unmask that was powerful enough to remove actresses [macron] pancake makeup.
In the following years, he launched a full makeup and skin-care line, which quickly won the devotion of Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, and Jane Birkin. Today, his products are still in demand among beauty insiders: His handcrafted Botan brushes were used on the set of Memoirs of a Geisha, and his 24-karat-gold eyelash curler is a favorite of singer Gwen Stefani.
