ATLANTA -- Vitamin D deficiency appears to be common in the northeastern United States among premenopausal women with early-stage breast cancer, Dr. Dawn Hershman reported in a poster session at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Vitamin D levels were measured after curative surgery but before adjuvant therapy in 36 consecutive women aged 27-54 years. None were taking calcium or vitamin D supplements.
Four had a serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OHD) level greater than 30 ng/mL, a value considered to be optimal. Levels were between 20 and 30 ng/mL in 18 women and were less than 20 ng/mL in 14 women, 3 of whom had "deficient" serum 25-OHD levels that were less than 12 ...
