THE Indian government's directive to the country's 12 major ports to ban from August 1 the entry of ships without proper protection and indemnity cover could result in a serious constriction of the country's ocean trade, writes Shirish Nadkarni in Mumbai .
All the major port trusts have since issued circulars to shipping companies and agents against vessels entering Indian ports without valid P'I cover from a club that is on the government's approved list.
'The idea behind the rules is to regulate the entry of vessels into ports to check pollution damage caused by spillage of oil or other hazardous and noxious substances,' said a government official. 'There are some 30-40 wrecks lying on the Indian coast that could cause a lot of damage to plying vessels.'
