Byline: Malaysian-built vessels will boast revolutionary Carousel towing system, writes Hugh O'Mahony
DUTCH salvage and towage company Multraship has ordered two combi-tugs from Malaysian shipbuilder Nautica Nova Shipbuilding ' Engineering which incorporate the innovative Carousel towing system.
The vessels are designed specifically to address the needs of big ships requiring escort facilities into harbours and rivers.
The first of the two Carousel combi-tugs is scheduled for delivery from the Penang builder at the end of 2007, with the second vessel due about three months later.
The vessels will be highly stable both statically and dynamically and will also be especially fuel-effective, producing potential savings of 30%-50% over conventional tonnage, according to their developer.
The combi-tugs are designed for unrestricted harbour towage, escort services and seagoing towage. They feature two General Electric 7FDM 12-cylinder diesel engines of 2,290 kW at 1,050 rpm each. Their unique design incorporates a large conventional ducted propeller at the stern and an azimuthing bow-thruster, resulting in high efficiency combined with exceptional manoeuvrability in continuous ahead or astern operation, both free sailing and towing.
