TAR from a major oil spill fouling the coast of Lebanon has reached Syria, underlining fears that the pollution could spread to a wider area as continuing hostilities frustrate clean-up operations, writes Nigel Lowry in Athens.
At least 10,000 tonnes of heavy fuel oil has spilled along the Lebanese coast from power plant storage tanks at Jeih, about 20 miles south of Beirut, that were twice hit by the Israeli air force.
The country's environment minister said that an additional 15,000 tonnes was expected to follow and other agencies have mentioned a potential spill that could reach 35,000 tonnes.
According to the ministry about one-third of the ravaged country's coastline has been affected.
The government called for international assistance 10 days ago especially requesting clean-up equipment such as dispersants, booms, absorbents, skimmers and specialised craft.
