A groundbreaking new drug which can significantly prolong the lives of kidney cancer sufferers is launched in Northern Ireland today.

But NHS patients hoping to avail of the new 'magic bullet' drug Sutent were warned that while it has been officially licensed it has not yet received funding. Consequently, they may have to wait some time before the possibility of benefiting from it.

From today, Sutent is licensed across the UK to treat metastatic renal cell carcinoma, or advanced kidney cancer, and a rare cancer known as GIST (gastro-intestinal stromal tumour) which affects the stomach and is found in around just ten people in …
