Psychiatric link to prime suspect in fatal stabbing probe

THE prime suspect for the murder of a young mother had been attending psychiatric institutions for some time and suffers from a long history of serious mental illness.

The revelation came as gardai tried to recover the carving knife believed to have been used to butcher Jessica Prendergast (21) in her own home on the day of her son's first birthday.

Despite a detailed search of Jessica's Cork home and stretches of the River Lee channels in the area over the past 48 hours, no trace of the knife has so far been recovered.
