TAIPEI, Aug 1 Asia Pulse - The country's five major convenience store chains signed an agreement on voluntary energy-saving measures with the Bureau of Energy (BOE) under the Ministry of Economic Affairs Monday.
The agreement promotes energy conservation through the voluntary collaboration of corporations and aims to lower total electricity usage by 5 per cent to 10 per cent within three years, which would in turn decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 59,000 metric tons.
Since convenience stores operate on a 24-hour, non-stop basis, the stores have a higher density of electricity consumption per acre than other enterprises, said BOE Director-General Yeh Huey-ching.
Yeh said that if convenience store chains can successfully promote energy conservation, it may encourage other businesses and individual citizens to follow suit.
