THERE IS SOMETHING missing. It is the same something missing that there has always been, although we are less likely than in the past to believe that we can overcome the deficiency by collective effort.
That something is a national culture. Let me be clear what I mean by that term--I am not talking about cultural nationalism, the idea that culture should promote nationhood.
