Jul. 29--Norm Lewellyn has a treasure trove of memories from his three-decade affiliation with Western High School athletics. The former Panther coach and athletic director points to his relationship with Mike Fulk as one of the gems that shines brightest.
"Mike was one in a lifetime," Lewellyn recalled. "He was fun loving, hard working and would do anything in the world you asked him to do. He was a kid -- he might do something mischievous -- but he'd always say he did it and he always had a smile on his face. He was just a really super young man."
Lewellyn and others reflected this week on Fulk, who died Monday at age 55 following an apparent heart attack. Fulk died in Atlanta, where he was an operation division manager for UPS.
Fulk played football, basketball and baseball and ran track at Western and went on to play football at Indiana University where he led the Hoosiers in tackles, two of his three seasons. The San Francisco 49ers drafted the 6-foot-3, 235-pound middle linebacker in the fifth round of the 1973 NFL draft, but knee injuries derailed his career.
