LAS VEGAS -- The world's first partial face transplant to a 38-year-old French woman in November 2005 began as collaboration among three old friends.

"We were three surgeons, perhaps three mavericks," who ultimately recruited a multidisciplinary team of 50 surgeons and other physicians from France and Belgium who worked on the transplant, Dr. Benoit G. Lengele recounted at an international symposium sponsored by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
